2016 - Conserving Carolina purchased 1,000 acres of Little White Oak Mountain (LWOM) to protect it from being developed.
2019 - Conserving Carolina transferred 600 acres to the State of North Carolina and 300 acres to Polk County for the creation of a local park.
2020 - 2023 - Polk County Parks and Recreation as well as local community leaders and other stakeholders held a series of planning sessions to formulate a vision for LWOM and to strategize on funding options for their vision.
Polk Country acquired another 140 acres of land adjacent to the current recreation area to bring to the total land amount to almost 600 acres at LWOM.
Based on stakeholder and community feedback, Polk County contracted Community Trail Design, LLC to design and plan a bike-optimized shared use recreational trail system on the slopes of LWOM .
2024 - Polk County contracted Trail Dynamics, a local North Carolina trail builder, to construct the Phase 1 of the trail system.
2025 - In March of 2025, the Little White Oak Mountain trails became available for public use.
