Friends of Little White Oak Mountain is a 501(c)(3) Nonprofit founded in 2025 with the goal of building and maintaining trails to connect our community with nature and ensure lasting access to the mountain’s beauty and outdoor opportunities. We work closely with Polk County on long-term planning and the day-to-day care of Little White Oak Mountain.
Little White Oak Mountain (LWOM) is located in Mill Spring, North Carolina approximately 90 minutes west of Charlotte and 40 miles southeast of Asheville. It is a sub peak of the mountain group comprised of White Oak Mountain, Tryon Peak and Miller Mountain. The peak of LWOM sits at 2,340 ft.
LWOM and its slopes, ongoing targets of conservation efforts, were saved from residential development through a 1,000 acre land purchase by the non-profit land trust Conserving Carolina in 2016. 600 of those acres became an addition to the neighboring Green River Game Lands, while Polk County purchased 300 remaining acres with a donation from Conserving Carolina, a Land and Water Trust Fund grant, Polk Community Foundation funds, a Parks and Recreation Trust Fund grant (PARTF), and generous private donations. In 2023, Conserving Carolina sold Polk County an additional 140 acre parcel to grow the entire County Park Complex to nearly 600 acres in size.
